FACTS:

Yala is a safari region which is not looked after by any other charity.
It is a poor region where people rely only on tourism. But tourists only come to Yala for a day or two to visit the safari. Nobody stays around long enough to make any difference for the dogs, and they stay forgotten.
The animals are severely malnourished, struggling with mange, untreated wounds, cancer, with no access to veterinary care.
Since there also isn’t any spay&neuter program in place, puppies are being born into the live of misery with only around 15% of them making it adulthood.
You can see dead puppies alongside roads, victims of traffic accidents, wildlife or cruelty.
The only humane way how to prevent this is spay&neuter program.
IMPACT:

We have been focusing on Hikkaduwa since 2023 and the difference is visible; we regularly get messages from tourists commenting on our effort.
In September 2025 we received this message from a tourist who spent over a month in Sri Lanka.
‘My first time on Sri Lanka. I had a small picture in my head what to expect. I arrived in Hikkaduwa with a vision of streets full of dogs and cats running around. But no! I was surprised how few dogs were running around alone and even if they did, they looked quite healthy. Meeting Nayana from Lucas Helps Dogs showed me how great work they do. Visiting the temple and seeing some of their dogs running around, playing, and eating all snacks I brought fulfilled my heart with happiness and gratefulness for people like Ali, Nayana and all those who are helping the creatures who can’t help themselves and has no rights on this beautiful but cruel to animals island. Great job! Wish you all best of luck and tones of love energy!
I wish all areas in Sri Lanka had someone like Lucas Helps Dogs to make a difference for the street animals.’

PLAN FOR YALA:

We held a very successful 3 days clinic in Yala in January 2026. In just 3 days we treated 175 animals who would otherwise had no access to veterinary care.
The feedback from the local community was overwhelming. People were so grateful for our help.
So the decision has been made. We need to continue. We have set a date for February 2027. We plan to do it again, this time even bigger - more volunteers, more animals treated, achieving long lasting change.
DONATIONS:

This clinic is an ‘extra’. Our usual donations do not cover this huge cost.
Lucas Helps Dogs is a not for profit and run entirely by volunteers from their homes.
We do not have any rental expenses, no wages to pay, so 99% of all donations go directly help the dogs & cats (the remaining 1% is used for printing educational materials, insurances etc).
It only costs £30 to change one dog or cat life forever.
